I cannot believe how expensive medicines have gotten. Some copays are $60+ for one medicine! However, I have found a way to save a ton on medicines that my family and I take on a regular basis. Many insurance companies have a mail order pharmacy that you can get several months at a time of your medicine (usually increments of 3 months).
For instance, for the following medicines we take, look at the savings:
Medicine C costs $60 a copay at Walgreens for one-month supply. For 3 months that would be $180. I get 3 months from Medco for $100. That is a savings of $80 for a three-month supply.
Medicine D costs $20 copay at Walgreens for one-month supply. For 3 months that would be $60. I get 3 months from Medco for $21.06. That is a savings of $39.94 for a three-month supply.
And the best I save for last. Albuterol for my boys = $60 for one puffer or one month supply as they predict. For 3 months that would be $180. I get 3 months from Medco for $25. That is a savings of $155 for a three-month supply!
The only thing you have to make sure is that your doctor writes your prescription for a three-month supply. The companies vary how you place your order for the prescriptions, but with most you can mail in the scrip from your doctor or get your doctor to fax or call in the order.
This saves us tremendously! Check it out with your insurance!
