I can’t believe that almost two years have passed and I never got to do my 2024 and 2025 Purim recap posts. Well, better late than never! Hopefully these ideas will be helpful to you for future Purims!

For the past 8 years we have done a family costume with matching shaloch manos. Each year it gets a little harder to decide what we will do because I need three teenagers to also agree! I have begged them to let us continue this tradition until they finish high school. After that, they will be in Beis Medrash and they can do what they want!

Here is our family costume from last year and the wonderful shaloch manos ideas from friends and community members.

We decided that we would be the four seasons and Mother Nature (we are only 5 instead of 6 since my oldest is in Beis Medrash and celebrating there). I saw lots of ideas on how to carry this out, but with three yeshiva boys at home I knew I had to make it a bit classier to convince them to wear it. That is when I thought of decorating vests. Each boy and my husband picked a season they wanted and we cut out felt shapes to adorn each vest. We had a lot of fun working on them together!

MATERIALS:

  • For the seasons:
    • fall leaves (from Amazon)
    • flowers and green leaves (from Michaels)
    • vests (from Amazon)
    • felt sheets* (we got various colors to create each season, with larger pieces of white)
    • felt glue* (get several, good to have 1 for each person making a vest)
    • fabric scissors* (have 2-3 if you can)
    • sparkle hats (from a previous year’s costume, from Amazon)
  • For Mother Nature:

* Items with an asterisk can be found at Michaels, Walmart, Amazon, or any sewing or craft store.

The snowflakes were not easy to cut, so I could advise if you are making this idea to try to find some precut ones!

For my costume, I made a headband and sash using leaf garland and fake flowers that I found at the Dollar Tree. I used some flower tape I had from a previous project to adhere the flowers to the garland after twisting the wire around it.

For the vests, we cut the shapes or used the precut ones we wanted and adhered them with felt glue. Be careful to put cardboard between the vest layers so they don’t stick together!

OUR SHALOCH MANOS:

To go along with our theme, I found four candies – one for each season. I love finding bags or containers that can be reused, and these four sectioned containers were perfect! I designed an inside card on Microsoft Publisher that described our theme, listed the items and their hectures, and included a photo of our boys. I love to include a photo in our costumes, but that is only possible if I get our costumes ready earlier in the week before!

I think they came out cute and I hope people reuse(d) the containers!

MORE WONDERFUL SHALOCH MANOS:

Here are some of the wonderful shaloch manos our friends and community members gave us.

ELEGANT AND HOMEMADE BAKED GOODS:

Several of our friends and community members gave us elegantly-packaged baked goods and other treats! These are always great for a treat or Shabbos dessert! Thank you to R’ Gershon & Shayna, R’ David & Yael, and Yaakov & Shanna.

BEAUTIFULLY-WRAPPED TREATS:

These friends found elegant ways to package their goodies – multiple small containers with a tray; using a frame, plastic tray, or lucite tray as a base, and beautiful bows with clear bags! Thank you to R’ Shimshon & Miriam, Mordechai & Temima, R’ Moshe Chaim & Tzirel, R’ Moshe & Ariella, Aryeh & Elianna, and my school.

OTHER THEMES:

Construction workers – Temima & Mordechai also have for many years coordinated their costumes with their shaloch manos. This year she found many of the costume items on Amazon. She cricuted the designs on the shirts to make them personalized, too. The yellow bags were also from Amazon. She found the candy tools at a kosher candy store in Baltimore. So cute!

Ready-to-eat meals – It is always nice to get something that can go right in our lunches or eaten right on the spot! We got overnight oats; noodles, hummus, and carrots; a sushi salad; noodles, carrots and fish hamantashen; and hot dog lunch (not pictured).

Purim story told with a wild animal theme – Dr. Dovid & Gitty told the Purim story with a new twist through their shaloch manos.

Purple – R’ Maier Shraga & Goldie created an elegant box full of purple colored items. Beautiful!

Love & Weddings – Our friends Vicki & Marc had a year filled with many loving events (2 weddings and 2 graduations) so they devoted their shaloch manos to related items (candy with mazel tov greetings, Hershey kisses, and Israeli pretzels)! R’ Yitzie & Racheli created a Black & White wedding invitation relating those colors to Hashem’s hand in our lives.

Space – We got three different shaloch manos each with their own take on a space-related theme. R’ Simcha & Devorah always try to come up with shaloch manos with a play on words using their last name. This year they were “Cohen”stellations and their foods were based on two constellations, the sun, and the universe. Igor & Anya related theirs to hitchhiking across the universe and included cosmic brownies. Angela & Tzvi always come up with very elaborate, creative themes and this one was no exception. They found many products related to the sun and the moon.

Apple – Our friend Kim made her shaloch manos with yummy apple treats! All parve, too!

Lumber jacks – Chaim & Talia are super-creative and usually match their costumes to their shaloch manos. I have featured them on my blog a few other times. This year, they all dressed as lumber jacks with matching plaid shirts and came up with great foods to include in their hearty snack bag! Sorry I didn’t get a photo of the family this year!

More animals — The Big Bad Wolf and Zebras – My friends Devora & Jonathan and Michelle both dressed up to match their animal-themed shaloch manos. So cute!

Make-your-own candy sushi – I have featured my friends Bella & Yosef on here every year. They always come up with amazing themes with costumes, shaloch manos, and party decorations and food to match! Their kids have had sushi business for years, so it makes senses that this year’s shaloch manos matched, too!

Candyland – R’ Mendy & Daniella often plan matching costumes and shaloch manos, too. This year the family dressed up as this popular kids’ game and made delicious cupcakes to match!
