I have neglected blogging the past few months with school and Hebrew School starting, as well as the busyness of the Fall Jewish holidays. However, I wanted to share a few tips that have saved us money or simplified our holidays this holiday season.’
Hanging Sukkah decorations:
Last year, I came up with a tip that finally solved the problem of our Sukkos decorations falling down mid-holiday. I used to stock up on 3M Command Strips (whenever they went on sale at Office Depot) to hang our decorations. However, if it rained the adhesive was no longer sticky and everything would fall down. The sukkah was then too wet to rehang them.
We had tried other options like push pins, nails, duct tape, but nothing seemed to work. I also didn’t like making holes in anything laminated, because that lets in water. Then the artwork is ruined.
So I decided to try something new. I used duct tape to create a solid tab hanging off each laminated decoration. I then used a staple gun to adhere them! For the first time ever, nothing fell down! It was so easy to hang everything again this year!
By the way, our custom is to laminate favorite pieces of artwork made by our boys during the year. (See Saving money at Office Depot.) We add a few new pieces each year and then take down a few from previous years. The boys love to see how their talents have improved and it brings back memories to look at their past artwork.
Simanim cards:
We never seem to have enough simanim cards each year for Rosh Hashanah. This year, my friend Mara at Kosher on a Budget, created a beautiful Simanim card with English and Hebrew. I didn’t get them ready before this Rosh Hashanah, but I did get them laminated with my new Sukkos decorations today.
